Three Stories and One on Education
From a very young age I was told to work hard at school. The logic was;you work hard get good grades get a well paying job and become rich and successful.
The very year I was born, a baby was born in Antwerp Belgium. The baby's name;Romelu Lukaku. Like me the baby had talents. The parents wanted a great education for their child. So they sent him to a good school. They soon realised, however, that their son was great with a football. They sent him to a football academy. There he received knowledge,but also the opportunity to cultivate his talent.
Twenty five years later. He is a multimillionaire and I have no savings whatsoever.
What went wrong?
Another example is a story Sir Ken Robinson told during a Ted talk. He talked about a little girl who had problems concentrating in class. The girls parents thought their child had a problem. So the mother took the child to a psychologist. The Doctor examined the child and suggestions to the mother;he told her to send the girl to a dance school. The parents heeded his advice and sent their daughter to a dance school. Decades later she become a ballerina and made millions of US dollars.
Perhaps an example closer home may suffice. Malawi born and raised Gabadinho Mhango. He followed his dreams and became a player for Orlando Pirates of South Africa. He is a millionaire(in Malawi Kwacha terms). Why? Because he was given space to cultivate and nurture his talent.
Education is important. It is what keeps us sane and knowledgeable; but the truth is it has limits. It was built for an age and era different from the current one. It has outgrown its lifespan and changes must be considered.
The problem with the current system of education is its monotony. I think it limits the potential of so many people. It applies uniform tests for all individuals. This, without allowing them to self express individually. So a Math test will be used to define the intelligibility of the poet and the doctor.
The solution is to allow children to have opportunities for self expression. They must be fed knowledge,but they must be allowed to deduce that knowledge in their own way. Break the trend of uniformity. Allow the artist to manifest. The philosopher to manifest. The doctor to manifest.
